When Courage Feels Hard to Find
When you are in a valley, courage can feel like something you have to manufacture.
That is why Joshua 1:9 is such a steady word for the weary soul.
God spoke these words to Joshua at a major turning point. Moses had died. Israel was preparing to enter the land God had promised. Joshua was stepping into leadership, responsibility, conflict, and uncertainty. This was not a sentimental moment. It was a moment that required obedience.
And into that moment, God said: “Be strong and courageous.”
But God did not ground Joshua’s courage in Joshua’s personality, experience, or ability to control the outcome. He grounded Joshua’s courage in His own presence: “for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
That is the heart of this promise.
Courage Is Not Pretending Fear Is Gone
Sometimes we think courage means we should never feel afraid. But biblical courage is not the absence of fear. It is obedience to God even when fear is speaking loudly.
God says, “Do not be afraid.” That does not mean fear will never try to rise up. It means fear is not allowed to rule the heart of the person who belongs to God.
Fear says, “You are alone.”
God says, “I will be with you.”
Fear says, “You cannot take another step.”
God says, “Be strong and courageous.”
Fear says, “The future is too uncertain.”
God says, “Wherever you go, I am already there.”
This does not mean every circumstance will become easy. Joshua still had battles ahead. Obedience still required action. Faith still had to be lived out step by step.
But Joshua did not have to move forward alone.
Neither do you.
Do Not Be Discouraged
Discouragement often comes when the road is longer than expected.
You prayed, but the burden is still there. You obeyed, but the answer has not come yet. You tried to be faithful, but the situation still feels heavy. Discouragement can make you feel like your story is stuck.
Joshua 1:9 reminds us that weariness does not get to define the end of the story.
“Do not be discouraged” is not a denial of hardship. It is a call to trust God in the middle of hardship. It is the Lord reminding His people that His presence is greater than the pressure in front of them.
You may not feel victorious today. You may not see the full road. You may not understand why this season has taken so much out of you. But you can take the next faithful step.
That may be all God is asking of you today.
Not the whole journey.
Not every answer.
Not perfect confidence.
Just the next step of obedience with your eyes fixed on Him.
God’s Presence Is the Foundation of Strength
The most important part of Joshua 1:9 is not Joshua’s courage. It is God’s presence.
The command to be strong is connected to the promise that God is near. That means biblical strength is not self-reliance. It is dependence on the Lord.
For Christians, this promise finds even deeper comfort in Jesus Christ. Before Jesus ascended, He told His disciples, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20 NIV). The presence of God is not a distant idea. It is the living hope of everyone who belongs to Christ.
You are not held by your emotional strength.
You are not sustained by your ability to predict the future.
You are not carried by perfect circumstances.
You are held by the faithful presence of God.
That is why you can keep walking.
A Faithful Step for Today
As you reflect on Joshua 1:9, do not turn it into pressure to appear strong. Let it become an invitation to lean on the Lord.
Name the fear honestly. Bring the discouragement into prayer. Ask God for courage—not courage for every possible future, but courage for today.
Maybe your next step is making the phone call. Maybe it is forgiving someone. Maybe it is asking for help. Maybe it is opening your Bible again. Maybe it is resting instead of striving. Maybe it is simply refusing to let fear make the decision for you.
God meets His people in ordinary steps of obedience.
And He is with you wherever you go.
Prayer
Lord, strengthen my heart today. When fear feels loud, remind me that Your presence is greater. Give me courage to take the next faithful step, even if it feels small. Replace discouragement with trust, and help me walk in obedience with a calm spirit. Thank You that I do not have to face this road alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
